"By the power vested in me," Garrett Peale, ordained officiant, clasped his hands together, "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may now kiss the bride."
Amid a chorus of cheers, the groom, a skinny nineteen-year-old in an oversized suit, picked up his young bride and twirled her in the air. The bride wore a short ballerina dress, complete with tutu and black-and-white striped stockings.
Watching from the sidelines, Olive murmured, "A match made in Hot Topic." But when the bride pointed her pink Converse-clad foot in the air, Olive couldn't help smiling. The ceremony was tiny, boasting a guest count of merely ten, and slapdash by Olive's estimation. Two weeks from proposal to "I Do." She wished they were given more time to show Indigo Bay the kind of spectacular weddings Cottage was capable of, but as the newlyweds ran down the aisle amid a shower of dollar-store confetti, Olive felt a momentary flood of satisfaction.
As evening eased into night and the sky above Cottage on the Green darkened from tangerine to a deep plum, Olive saw that she had her work cut out for her. In the past, Olive tried to make herself scarce during weddings, barricading herself in her room for an all-night gaming marathon. Due to the Belmont threat, she was now interested in the family business, motivated even.... she was finally awake. And being awake, she began to notice things that sailed under her nose before.
"You look worried, Junebug."
Gnawing on her thumbnail, Olive gave her dad a fleeting smile. "I'm just a little exhausted."
"You did good work today," he said, handing her a plastic champagne flute filled with Coke. "How did you become so good at tying a corset?"
Downing her drink, Olive glanced at the beautiful bride and her groom. "A cosplayer who couldn't lace up a corset wouldn't be worth her salt," she said, wiggling her sweaty toes inside her ballet flat. Save for a scar, her foot had long since healed, but she still felt the phantom pains of that rusty nail.
The bride's ballerina dress looked deceptively simple if it were not for the complicated contraption of hooks and laces. With only minutes before the start of the ceremony and the bridesmaids fumbling with the laces, Olive was forced to step in and wrestle the dress into submission. Who'd have known that all those anime expos she'd attended in high school (and last year) would come in handy?
As the reception progressed, Olive walked in the periphery of the party with her dad. They kept a keen eye on the proceedings, making sure everything ran on time while remaining part of the background. After the toasts, they made their way onto the veranda with a plate piled with hor d'oeuvres.
"Too bad they didn't cater through Confectionery Kisses. Most of this is not photographable," Olive said, eyeing the sad selection of mini pizza bagel bites, meatballs, crackers, and cheese slices. "Think of the missed PR opportunities."
Her dad shrugged. "It's what the couple likes. It's not as bad as it looks.
